As a part of the Khwairamband Bazar development work being taken up under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Works Minister K Ranjit laid the foundation stone of Purana market today morning.
Briefing media persons at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Ranjit said that the construction works of the new market complexes could not be initiated as no contractors came forward and was again delayed for a long time due to the volatile law and order situation.

When the Ministry concerned asked the State Government to return the sanctioned amount, the Chief Minister persuaded the Urban Development Minister consequent upon which the construction of Laxmi market was entrusted to Simplex company.
As no companies based outside the State have responded to the tender call for construction of Purana market, the work has been entrusted to the State PWD, Ranjit informed.
Stating that there will be some changes in the traffic arrangement within the Imphal city to facilitate construction of the new market complexes, the PWD Minister appealed to all the people, stall owners, and vendors to bear with the inconvenience.
He further said that plans are afoot to develop Khwai Bazar and Maharani bridge in line with the requirements of the changing time.
About 20 stalls which will affected by the proposed development work will be located temporarily at the site where there was Ranjan Pharmacy earlier.
The Government has also come to an understanding with ngari stall owners to demolish their stalls to make way for construction of a new Purana market, said Ranjit.
Even though the State Government wish completion of all these construction works in time, it is really hard to fix a date in the State abound with bandhs and blockades, he noted.
The estimated cost of the Purana market is Rs 37.72 crores inclusive of 10 percent agency charge.
Out of this estimated cost, 90 percent will be funded by the Union Govt.All the three markets complexes��Laxmi market, New market and Purana market, will be handed over to the public next year, declared the Works Minister.
