Imphal, May 03 2009:
Describing as 'unfortunate' and darkest episode in the history of manipur, the proscribed people's United Liberation Front (PULF) remembered victims of the may 3, 1993 violence that claimed the lives of over 150 people, including women and children, through prayer sessions and distribution of eatables to inmates of orphanage centres.
A PULF release issued by its publicity secretary Anish Khan, reminded that the violent incidents on this day in 1993 was triggered by a few anti-social elements who spread false rumours consequently resulting in many innocent citizens losing their lives.
Expressing that owing to strong disapproval by the masses the violence ceased soon after as the people realised handiwork of a few anti-social elements and mischief mongers, Anish said religious leaders led Muslim community in praying for the peaceful rest of the departed souls.
Conveying that PULF cadres joined in the invocation for the almighty's blessing to usher in peace and re-consolidation in the Manipuri society, the release exhorted that under no circumstance should the existing tranquillity in the multi-ethnic society be compromised.
Under the theme of promoting peaceful co-existence and eradication of animosity debates and symposiums were also organised under the initiative of PULF at different locations of the valley districts, said the secretary (publicity).
Meanwhile, PULF also conveyed condolence to the family of Md Ajehruddin of Keirao Makchin Makha Leikai, who was allegedly slain by a team of 28 Assam Rifles on May 1 night (7 pm) at near Ucheckon Takhok after the same person was arrested from Lilong area earlier in on the same afternoon.
The armed outfit also alleged that the small arm (.32 revolver) claimed to have been recovered from Ajehruddin's possession was actually planted by the AR team to cover up the extra judicial action.
Ajehruddin had been done to death at the behest of an anti-social element who surrendered to the Army but had been indulging in extortion activities, Anish Khan contended in the release.
