Imphal, June 17 2015 :
Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has condemned the corporal punishment meted out by a teacher of St Joseph's School, Sangaiprou to a Class VI student.
DESAM president Moiranthem Angamba told reporters that the student was beaten up with a stick by computer teacher Guru-mayum Rupachandra yester- day.
Angamba said that the teacher refused to admit his mistake although the matter was discussed in a joint meeting of parents, DESAM volunteers and the teacher.
Saying that corporal punishment is not permitted by the Right to Education Act, Angamba said that it was unfortunate that some teachers staged sit-in-protest in support of Rupachandra today.
Angamba said that the student was beaten up as he responded 'yes' to the teacher's question - 'can't you remain silent, will you maintain silent ?' .
Saying that the student was not excused even after he said sorry to the teacher, Angamba said that the authority concerned must initiate befitting action against the teacher.
He further said that the teacher must be expelled from St Joseph School and no school must employ him.
