Campaign on child rights held

A public awareness campaign on 'The Right of Children to free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 has been organised by Khengjonglang Theatre, Wangkhei at Sandang Senba Maring village this morning.Khengjonglang is a centre for theatre research, production and community welfare and the campaign is being held under the guidance of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights with Hueiyen Lanpao daily as the media partner.As a part of the campaign, a play highlighting various rights of the children was staged at the said venue along with an interaction session with the artistes.Speaking at the occasion, Khengjonglang director Thanil Leima said inspite of Parliament of India passing The Right of Children to free and Compulsory Education Act on October 4, 2009, in Manipur benefit of the legislation had been insignificant.
Citing lack of knowledge on the act by both the parent/guardians and the teachers, she expressed hope that endeavours of the theatre centre for the children to benefit from the Act would materialise in the near future.
The legislation also implies that there should be one teacher for every 30 students in a primary level.
Saying that for the upper primary level the teacher-student ratio should be 1/35, she explained and added that is mandatory for private educatio-nal institutions to reserve 25 percent seat for students belonging to the underprivileged class of the society.
