World Mental Health Day celebration : Mental hospital in the offing

A fifty-bedded mental hospital is coming up soon at JNIMS, according to Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing.
The Minister was speaking at the World Mental Health Day observance at the Auditorium of JN Manipur Dance Academy today.
The programme was jointly organised by Health Department; Manipur State Mental Health Authority and Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur branch with the theme, Depression: A Global Crisis.
While stressing on the essence and value of mental well-being, Phungzathang exhorted doctors and mental health workers to help patients in de-stressing them.
He urged health workers to take extra care in treating and dealing with mental disorder patients.
Phungzathang Tonsing said fifty-bedded mental hospital would be set up soon at JNIMS.
The NEC has given the green signal to go ahead with the proposal.
Further, he said the percentage of people suffering from depression is higher among female than their male counterpart in the State.
The Minister attributed the reason for higher percentage of depression among female due to various forms of domestic violence.
Delivering a speech on the theme, Dr L Surchandra said depression is curable with proper treatment.
A patient should strictly adhere to the medical and other prescriptions of the doctor in order to overcome the mental disorder due to depression.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof M Akshyakumar, Retd Clinical Psychologist of RIMS, said depression is very common in human being.
But if a person suffers depression for a continuous period of more than a week, the person is said to be suffering from depressive disorder.
He said that the high rate of crime, corruption and non-availability of jobs and financial problem in Manipur are causes of depression among the people.
The observance programme was also attended by Director of Family Welfare, Dr N Achouba Singh; HoD of Psychiatry, RIMS, Dr N Heramani Singh; President of Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur Branch, Dr L Surchandra as the guests of honour while the function was presided by Dr A Bijoy Singh, Director of Health Services, Manipur.
