Imphal, October 10 2012:
The 48-hour bandh call given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the disappearance of Irungbam Irabanta crippled normal life along the Imphal-Ukhrul road today.
No vehicles were seen moving along the route due to the strike that began from last midnight and will continue till midnight of October 11.Even though vehicles for passenger transport service were off the road, public transport service up to places like Sawombung, Pourabi and Lamlai Tejpur along the highway was available.
There was no report of any untoward incident so far during the course of the general strike till evening.
Notably, the Irabanta JAC had earlier on October 6 announced for another indefinite economic blockade on the Imphal-Ukhrul road beginning October 12 if the state Government falls short of giving the JAC a tangible answer on the missing of Irabanta within October 11 .
Irabanta, a sand supplier for Maphou Dam construction, was allegedly kidnapped by the rebel NSCN-IM on May 27 last.
Since then he has remained untraceable.
He is a resident of Nongdam Maning Leikai in Imphal East.
