Imphal, October 10 2012:
The joint action committee constituted in connection with the alleged fake encounter case of Thiyam Romenkumar has demanded that the State Government must spell out the trial process of the involved police commandos to the general public.
The JAC conducted a public meeting at SYWO ground, Irom Meijrao today.
Strongly decrying the killing of Romenkumar in an alleged fake encounter, the meeting observed that mere suspension of the involved commando personnel would not ease down public anger.
The trial process must clearly be spelt out to the public from time to time, the meeting resolved.
The meeting also demanded that the case be handed over to an independent agency like CBI and also conduct proper investigation based on the complaint lodged to the police by Romenkumar's wife.
The meeting also unanimously decided to initiate different forms of agitation if the Government fails to fulfil the demands of the JAC at the earliest.
Representatives from AMUCO, IPSA, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, COHR, AMAWOVA, CLK, Poirei Ita, AMKIL, NIPCO and WACAK also attended today's meeting.
It may be mentioned that 42-year-old Thiyam Romenkumar of Irom Meijrao Mamang Makha Leikai died in a reported encounter with Imphal West district police commandos at Lamdeng Khunou on October 2 last.
However, according to family members, he was picked up by unknown armed persons from his house.
Following a public uproar, four police personnel and two IRB personnel who were attached at Imphal West district police commandos have been put under suspension in connection with the incident.
