Need for public awareness on disaster management highlighted

Manipur is today experiencing an incomparable type of disaster and catastrophe like triggering of serial bomb blasts, violence and crime against women and children, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) LM Khoute has stated.
He was speaking at a function held to mark International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction at the Banquet Hall of 1st Manipur Rifles Battalion here today.
Organised by Department of Relief and Disaster management, Government of Manipur, the observance was held under the theme of
"Women and Girls: The Invisible Force for Resilience" .
Speaking as Chief Guest of the observance, ADGP Khoute commented that the state of Manipur has been suffering from a different type of disaster like serial bomb blasts, crime and violence against women and children.
The world may have encountered twelve million times of earthquakes, lakhs of thunderstorms, millions of lightning, Tsunamis and other disasters annually.
But Manipur and other parts of the country run into numerous violence and crimes, the police officer said.
Highlighting the importance of education, the ADGP articulated that only education can lead in the right path.
He also commented women and girl child should not be treated as poor victims but instead they should be supported and honoured and appealed to the Government to focus on the development and betterment of women and girls.
Delivering the Presidential address of the function, Principal Secretary, Relief and Disaster Management, Government of Manipur stated that the role of women and girls in disaster management is very important.
The roles of mothers in particular are quite praiseworthy.
As such, to create awareness among the women community in connection with disaster management is the need of the hour.
Besides ADGP Khoute and Dr Suhel Akhtar, the function was also attended by Th Joykumar (retd) Chief Engineer of PWD; Ch Rajendro, Faculty Member of DMI and Rk Manisana, President of Royal Riders, Manipur as Guests of Honour.
Prior to commencement of the observance function, a motor cycle rally was flagged off jointly by LM Khoute and Dr Suhel Akhtar from Imphal Secretariat, Bapupara.
Around 50 motor cyclists, mainly volunteers of Royal Riders, Manipur participated in the rally which covered different parts of Imphal city before concluded at 1st MR ground.
A spot painting competition was also organized to mark the occasion.
