Imphal, October 10 2012:
Setting October 30 as the deadline, All Hill Districts' Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS/SSA) Teachers' Union, Manipur (AHDEGSTUM) has threatened to launch intense agitations if the Government of Manipur fails to upgrade teachers appointed under the scheme to the level of primary teachers within the said deadline.
Addressing a press conference at Tampha Hotel here today, President of AHDEGSTUM Trimson Saka pointed out that altogether 717 teachers have been recruited by the government under the scheme.
These teachers have been performing their duties of teaching the students in community halls and private houses for the last many years as the Government fails to provide necessary school buildings and other infrastructures.
But now the problem faced by these teachers has further compounded after the government issues an order for posting newly recruited Primary teachers in areas where the EGS/SSA teachers have been teaching..
Spelling out irregularities in the system, Saka asserted that the State Mission Authority of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan had appointed them as Education Guarantee Scheme Volunteers Teachers in 2004-2005 with the promise that each teacher will receive honorarium of Rs 1000 per month and the centres would be subsequently upgraded to Primary Schools level.
"The Government has been promising to address our grievances for the last ten years but nothing has been done so far.
We feel like we have been cheated", Saka said.
He appealed to the Chairman/Secretaries and Chiefs of the villages not to accept the joining report of the newly posted Primary Teachers and warned that State Mission Authority and the State Government should be held responsible for any eventuality in this regard.
