Imphal, January 25, 2011:
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the State Government seeking explanation for its failure to furnish information on the inquiries conducted into killings and violence committed by security forces under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958. The notice was issued after hearing a special writ petition.
Speaking to media persons this afternoon, Human Rights Law Network director Meihoubam Rakesh said that one Wahengbam Joykumar submitted two written appeals to the State Home Department through RTI Act in February and May last year seeking information about inquiry reports conducted under the State Commission Inquiry Act.
However, the Home Department, instead of providing the information being sought, challenged the appellant in Court.
Subsequently, Wahengbam Joykumar filed a case in the Supreme Court on November 8 last year.
After perusing Joykumar's writ petitition complaint letter, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the respondents comprising of the Chief Secretary and Home Department Joint Secretary on December 6 last to give their response within 16 weeks.
Next hearing of the case has been fixed on April 8, Rakesh said.
