Imphal, January 25, 2011:
Pena artiste Khangembam Mangi of Thangmeiband Lourungpurel Leikai is among the outstanding individuals nominated for the Padmashree by the Government of India this year.
Talking to The Sangai Express, the 86-year old Pena artiste said that he is happy with the honour.
Mangi started playing Pena since he was 11. He used to follow his late father, another accomplished Pena artiste, in every performance all over the State.

In honour of his contribution to the field of Pena, Mangi has already been decorated with President's Award and other honours conferred by Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Manipur State Akademi and JN Manipur Dance Academy.
He has also given Pena performance in different parts of the globe.
Mangi said that at one time there was fear that Pena may lost its importance and influence.
But today there is hope with even young women Pena artistes taking up the art.
He, however, expressed unhappiness that the Government of Manipur has not taken up any tangible step towards promotion of Pena.
Veteran and champion wieght lifter N Kunjarani Devi has also been named for the Padmashree.
