Newly appointed Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) Thuigai Mathieu Rongmei has vowed that he would safeguard and protect the constitutional rights of the tribal communities in the State.
Speaking to media persons during a press meet held today at the office of MSCST at ADC Bhavan, Chingmeirong, the Chairperson highlighted the func- tions of the commission.
He said that he is committed to discharge the duties of being the Chairperson of MSCST at his best level.
Thuigai Mathieu Rong-mei said that MSCST was set up by the State Government as a constitutional body through the Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes Act, 2014.He added that the same Act was published in the official gazette on March 27, 2014 and it came into effect on March 31, 2016 .
Thuigai Mathieu Rong-mei went on to convey that the main function of MSCST is to investigate and examine the working of various constitutional and statutory safeguards provided for the protection of Scheduled Tribes in Manipur.
Stressing on other important functions of the com- mission, he said that these include inquiring into specific complaints with respect to deprivation of rights and safeguards of Scheduled Tribes in the State and participating, advising and evaluating the planning process of socio-economic development of the Scheduled Tribes.
Thuigai Mathieu Rong-mei added that making the public, particularly those who belong to Scheduled Tribes, aware of the objectives and functions of MSCST is vital to address the issues related to deprivation of their rights.
While informing that MSCST has its own vision and mission in connection with safeguarding the rights of Scheduled Tribes in the State, the Chairperson stated that a booklet highlighting tentative programs and policies will be released soon.
