Govt decides to defer Tupul-Kasom road

The State Government has decided to defer the construction/development work of Tupul-Kasom Khullen road via Bishnupur and Thoubal until the Asian Development Bank, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of DoNER sign an agreement.
A high ranking official of the State Government informed that the said road development work was set to begin from 2008 but it has been deferred till date because the State Government needs to pay Rs 30/40 crore for rehabilitation and settlement of affected people.
The steering committee headed by the Chief Secretary as chairman held a meeting this morning and deliberated on the road project.
Being a major project, the matter was discussed at the level of the Chief Minister this afternoon and it was decided to defer the project until a formal agreement is signed.
Once an agreement is signed between ADB, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of DoNER, the project would be implement under DoNER Ministry.
At the same time, the State Government has been considering to persuade the DoNER Ministry produce the amount which it should produce, informed the official.
The first extension period given by ADB for the project estimated to Rs 277.01 crores expired on July 17 .
The second extension would expire on October 17 this year.
In case the project is not initiated by October 17, there may not be any third extension.
One ADB expert is currently stationed at Imphal and the expert has already made an assessment for an alternative route to Imphal-Moreh road, added the official.
