Imphal, January 09 2012:
In addition to beefing up security measures all over the State, all Congress candidates have been given security escorts in view of the ban imposed by the CorCom, a group of seven militant groups on Congress and prohibitions declared by other UG groups.
Talking with The Sangai Express, DGP R Baral informed that commandos, MRs and IRBs have intensified frisking, checking and patrolling exercises during night so as to neutralise the threats and disruptive activities of UG groups.
Informing that Central paramilitary forces detailed for election duty have started arriving, the DGP stated that these Central forces would be deployed for area domination.
A joint meeting was also held with SPs of the four valley districts yesterday following which security measures were tightened in the valley area, Baral said.
Informing that all Congress candidates have been given security escorts, the new DGP stated that the strength of security escorts would be enhanced based on necessity and threat perceptions.
Some candidates of other parties have also been given security escorts.
However, allotment of security escorts to each and every candidate would be done only after the CEO furnishes the full list of candidates, he added.
