Maharaj Gambhir Singh Death Anniversary observed

Along with paying rich floral tributes, the State Archaeology, Department of Arts and Culture today observed the 178th Death Anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh at the final resting place of the late king at Canchipur.
Member of Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC) P Bhorot and Commissioner of Art and Culture RK Nimai graced the function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhorot said that Maharaj Gambhir Singh instituted the Manipur Levy in Cachar and forced the Awa army to flee back to end Seven Years' Devastation.
So, it is our duty to remember courage of Maharaj Ghambir Singh who saved Manipur from the hand of the Awas.
After driving away Awas from Manipur, Maharaj Gambhir Singh constructed his palace at Langthabal.
It is very important to conserve such historical monuments of the state.
Peace and unity will prevail in the society only when the people of both hills and valley conserve their cultures, tradition and religious beliefs, he said, while stressing the need to reconstruct the palace at Langthabal and the final resting place of the late king.

Commissioner Arts and Culture RK Nimai, who presided over the function, said that the people of the state should remember the contributions of Maharaj Gambhir Singh to Manipuri society and its people.
He also stressed the need to study the history of the state and conserve the cultural and religious traditions to bring mutual understanding among the different communities of the state.
Renowned writer N Kunjamohon also attended the function as Guest of Honour.
Paying floral tributes to Maharaja Gambhirsingh and Narasingh marked the occasion.
