A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Government of India and Government of Myanmar for export of tea from Manipur and import of 1000 metric tonne rice from Myanmar this year.
The MoU was signed on the sideline of the 5th North East Business Summit being held at Hyatt Regency, Kolkata under the joint sponsorship of the Ministry of DoNER and the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
Talking to The Sangai Express, officials taking part in the summit said that Manipur received several offers in different fields.
In addition to Ambassadors of Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh and China, many big business houses are also attending the summit which began
yesterday.
North East Excellence Award 2009 was distributed in the presence of DoNER Minister BK Handique, Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other top ranking officials in a glittering function held yesterday.
Imphal based Shija Hospital and Research Institute was conferred the North East Excellence Award 2009 in health sector.
Shija Hospital and Research Institute was selected for the award by DoNER Ministry and the Indian Chamber of Commerce for its contribution to health sector and in recognition of the potential of Imphal becoming a health care hub in South Asia.
The award was handed over to the institute's managing director Dr Kh Palin.
Boxing champion MC Mary Kom and folk artiste Guru Reuben Mashangva were also felicitated with the same award in the field of sports and culture respectively.
Besides highlighting the sporting talents and rich cultural heritage of Manipur, the recent progress in health care sector was also exposed to the world during the summit, conveyed the officials.
Addressing the summit, Tourism Minister TN Haokip drew attention of potential investors by pointing out that Manipur has great potential of becoming a commercial hub of entire Asiatic continent as both the Trans-Asian Highway and Trans-Asian Railway pass directly through Manipur.
He also highlighted the immense potential of Manipur in tourism sector.
Manipur has started receiving benefits of the summit, claimed the officials.
