Imphal, January 09 2010:
In tandem with the ongoing works to install night landing facility at Imphal airport, aeronautical and meteorological instruments installed at the airport will also be modernised.
The existing aeronautical-meteorological instrument system being operated manually would be upgraded suitably by coupling with some automatic equipment, said a source in Meteorological Department.
To look into the necessary requirements for the plan modernisation of the aeronautical-meteorological instrument system, a Meteorological Director would be coming from Pune in February.
The existing manual system can handle night landing at Imphal airport.
But automatic system is more efficient that the manual system.
In manual system, observations vary according to observers on duty.
There is no such variance in the automatic system, said the source.
The work of upgrading the aeronautical-meteorological instrument system includes laying of signal cable and power cable at the air-field.
With the help of this power cable and signal cable, wind parameters, visibility at the runway, condition of cloud, temperature, level of humidity etc can be easily observed on a monitor.
This project would take time.
Nevertheless, this can be accelerated if the project is entrusted to a reputed company, conveyed the source.
In case the project should be handed over to a company, it is necessary to conduct a national level tender at Pune.
Notably, installation works of Solar Power Obstruction Lights at Nongmaiching Hills, Chingphu Hills, Phunal Maring Hills, Heibok Hills and Langjing Hills to enable night landing at Tulihal Airport have been completed.
