Opium worth Rs 50 lakh seized

Altogether 20 Kgs of opium worth around Rs 50 lakh were seized by Jiribam police from two individuals at Jiribam at around 3.30 pm today.
According to a press release issued by Jiribam SP M Mubi, a Jiribam police team laid an ambush since the past few days after receiving a reliable input that habitual smugglers have been travelling on Imphal-Jiribam highway.
As the police personnel were checking and frisking vehicles and people at near Chandrapur oil pump, a car (Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire) came across the checking point.
Even as the police team shouted to halt, the car speeded up towards Jiribam town.
Immediately, the team alerted all check-posts through wireless transmitter and chased the speeding car.
The car was intercepted at the main gate of Jiribam police station and the occupants were taken inside the police station for a thorough verification.
The occupants were later identified as Montes Prashad (27) s/o Rabindra Prasad and Manoj Kumar Gupta (32) s/o Kanhaiya Gupta, both natives of Bihar.
On searching the car, 20 Kgs of opium packed in two packets were found concealed underneath.
On preliminary interrogation, the duo revealed that the contraband drug was delivered to them by one individual from Kangpokpi and they were transporting it to Silchar, conveyed the press release.
It added that a case has been registered at Jiribam police station under ND&PS Act and investigation has begun.
