Imphal, June 30 2019:
Directorate of Environment, which is currently undertaking the Nambul river rejuvenation project with the aim of cleaning up and preserving the river (which is regarded as the most polluted river in the State), has consulted Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) in connection with the project today.
In a meeting which was held at Sangai Continental, Thangal Bazaar today, the Directorate sought suggestions regarding the roles and responsibilities of media in ensuring the success of the initiative.
During the meeting, Deputy Director of the Dept, as well as the convenor of the implementation committee of the project, Dr T Brajakumar said that the Government can clean the river using machinery but the Government wishes long term solutions with the full cooperation of the people.
He conveyed that apex committee has been formed consisting of the clubs, Singlups and Meira Paibis of 12 wards which are located near the river bank and are covered by IMC.
The committee will monitor dumping of garbages and other pollutants into the river.
EGM secretary general Y Rupachandra suggested media persons to travel by rafts from the mouth of the Nambul river to its final draining area and report on the areas where the river is most polluted.
He expressed that planting trees near the river mouth will be helpful in ensuring that the water is always running and also suggested that electronic and print media carry photos of the pollution along the river, on a weekly basis, as well as organise awareness programmes for the people.
On the other hand, ISTV Editor in chief Brojendra Ningomba said that it will be very beneficial for all if the Nambul river is properly maintained, its water level is properly monitored at a constant level and boating facilities and recreational facilities are provided for the people as done in Singapore.
Various members of the guild also suggested the Directorate to recruit volunteers from various Leikais to keep the river clean, construct gardens and fruit orchards along the river banks and to construct parks or recreational spaces for people at the banks of the river.
