Awareness programme on RTI held

A one day awareness programme on 'Right to Information Act 2005' was held at Manipur Press Club today under the aegis of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and Manipur Information Centre (MIC).
O Sunil, Chief Information Commissioner, Manipur Information Centre, Dr S Ibocha, retd IPS Officer, State Information Commission, Bijoy Kakchingtabam, president of AMWJU, S Inao Singh, Deputy Registrar Judicial-1 (MIC) and Dr Ch Narendra, Advocate, attended the programme as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, O Sunil said that around 300 RTIs are filed in the State every year and the State ranks number 2 in filling of RTI in the Northeast, which is still lagging behind when compared to the from rest of the country.
The RTIs are mainly focused on corruption practices, he said.
He also said that there is a need to strengthen and spread awareness about the Right To Information Act among the people and this will help in bringing down corruption to some extent He also highlighted that journalists need to use RTI as a tool to get major headline based on RTI reply.
