Crowd attacks as cops try to nab suspects, 34 held

Imphal, July 30 2021:
A team of Imphal East District police was attacked and pelted stoned at after it tried to arrest some people suspected of pelting stones on them during an incident on July 21 .
In all, 34 people including 22 men, 8 women and 4 juveniles (1 girl, 3 boys) were rounded up for attacking the police.
According to a police report, on July 21, a team of Imphal East District Police detained 2 people for violating the curfew at Heikru Makhong Khumidok under Heingang Police Station.
After some talks regarding the prevailing situation, the police led them off after realising they were locals.
However, shortly after, the duo returned with other people and started attacking the police, causing damage to a police vehicle and injuring one of the personnel, who was later hospitalised.
In connection with the incident, Imphal East District police apprehended two people involved in the attack.
Based on their confessions, the police went to the locality on Friday morning to arrest another suspect.
However, as Heikru Makhong Khumidok was infamous for attacking the police whenever the forces were to arrest suspects, a 16-member special commando team led by Imphal East District Additional SP (Ops) M Roni went to the area along with a team of Heingang PS.
When the police team was trying to apprehend the suspect, the locals thronged the area and started raining stones at the security forces, causing damage to the police vehicles in the process and injuring many of the personnel.
Police were forced to fire tear gas shells to control the mob.
Later, huge police reinforcements arrived at the scene and took control of the situation.
In all, 34 people were arrested by police.
Heingang PS has registered a case against the rioters, who were produced before the Court on Friday and remanded to 7 days in police custody, the report conveyed.
