Imphal, July 30 2021:
Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide emergency relief materials including medicines and oxygen cylinders as humanitarian aid for the Covid-affected people in Myanmar.
In a letter sent to PM Modi on Friday; AIMS director Dr Atom Sunil attributed gradual improvement in the Covid-19 situation in India to Prime Minister's sincere spirit and hard work.
AIMS, however, pointed out that the number of Covid cases has been on the rise in Myanmar and is currently battling acute shortage of medical oxygen.
Further, the health system in the neighbouring country is on the verge of collapse due to strikes by doctors and nurses who have joined a nationwide civil disobedience campaign against the military that seized power.
People have defied lockdowns in Myanmar in order to purchase oxygen.
It has left countless people desperately scrambling to obtain oxygen supplies for sick family members and forcing thousands to stand in long queue for hours.
Patients are dying due to lack of oxygen.
The ethnic communities from North East India who are settling in the neighbouring country are begging for support in combating a massive spike in daily Covid-19 cases and the oxygen supply crisis, it stated.
AIMS further requested the government to intervene by providing emergency relief materials including medicines and oxygen cylinders as a humanitarian aid to Myanmar to prevent possible deterioration of the pandemic situation and deaths.
