Gold chain snatched, miscreants still at large

Two identified persons snatched a gold chain worth around Rs 1.5 lakh from a lady teacher from near Kalika Primary School across Irilbung police station, Imphal East district.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, Kalika Lairembi Youth Club secretary Khamnam Hemanta said that Jhorna Laiphrakpam was walking to the school from Irilbung bridge when two unidentified snatched her gold chain (necklace) .
The unidentified persons came on Honda Dio scooter (striped in green and black colours).
While one stood by the scooter, the other wearing a helmet marched up to the lady teacher, punched her on the face and snatched her necklace and scooted away.
Even though people present nearby chased the assailants, they managed to make their escape good as there was a gap of some seconds, Hemanta narrated.
Hemanta who is also chairperson of the school management committee said rise in the number of people abusing and selling intoxicating substances in and around Kalika was responsible for such criminal activities like robbery.
A campaign to check sale and abuse of intoxicating drugs would be launched in Kalika very soon in association with other local clubs in order to check criminal and anti-social activities, Hemanta said.
There are many liquor vendors close to Irilbung police station, he said while adding that yesterday's assault and robbery have created a fear psychosis among the teachers as well as students.
