Imphal, March 26 2011:
An official team of Manipur University will reassess overall condition of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) before a definite decision is taken in connection with grant of recognition to the proposed Nursing College of RIMS.
students of the nursing college are supposed to appear for examinations under the supervision/conduct of MU but the varsity declined to either recognise the College as an institute or entertain its students appear for examinations after its teaching faculties, already appointed, were found to be inefficient.
According to an informed source the MU team is likely to carry out the inspection on March 28 .
It is also informed that ahead of a planned inspection visit by officials of Nursing Council of India (NCI) in connection with the establishment of the Nursing College, a high level meeting attended by top officials of RIMS was held on May 18, 2009 at the office chamber of the RIMS Director.
In the said meeting appointment of the then RIMS' deputy Nursing Superintendent Th Chinglembi as principal of the Nursing College, Staff Nurse (PMR) M Vijayantimala as the vice principal and another staff nurse Y Sundari as assistant professor of the College were approved in addition to the appointment of one lecturer and six tutors from among the nursing staff of RIMS so as to present them as full-fledged teaching faculties of the proposed College.
Consequently on June 17, 2009 an order was issued by the then director (RIMS) officially confirming appointment of the first three individuals as principal, vice principal and assistant professor of the Nursing College.
Another order issued on June 25, 2009 further validated appointment of tutors/clinical inspectors from among 10 nursing staff of RIMS, disclosed the source adding that the Nursing College was run ever since these teaching faculties were appointed.
However, when asked to furnish documents to substantiate claims for the posts the said teaching faculties could not oblige thereby resulting in the MU keeping in abeyance recognition of the Nursing College as well as rejecting appraisal to conduct examinations for the nursing students.
Inspite of rejection by the MU against the said appointments on the ground that the teaching staffs do not commensurate with the prescribed norms and qualifications for such posts, RIMS authorities issued an advertisement on December 17, 2009 for direct recruitment of one assistant professor, five lecturers and 14 tutors but the appointment is yet to be effected till date.
With reference to the appointment controversies gripping the Nursing College of RIMS, the source also wondered as to whether RIMS authorities could convince the visiting inspection team of MU to save the career of the nursing students.
