Imphal, March 26 2011:
The All Tribal Chiefs' Association, Manipur has demanded amendment of the the sub-section (4) of section 3 of the Manipur (Village Authorities in the hills) Act, 1956 alleging that the very sub-section discriminates the legitimate rights of the traditional chiefship in the hill areas.
A statement of the association signed by its president Shimreisang Siro, vice president LS Haokip and general secretary Kabidon Gonmei said that the amendment is being sought as it invites breach of peace and distability in the age old tribal customary practices which have been carried down the historical landmark since time immemorial.
The original Act of 1956 implies the rights of Khullakpa/chief as ex-officio chairman of the particular village concerned while the new law prescribed that the chairman of the village shall be elected from among the elected member themselves.
