Imphal, November 14 2010:
The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) has flayed the initiative of Manipur University to merge Adult Continuing Education and Extension (ACEE) with
Education Department.
Taking reference to UGC 11th Plan Guidelines, the MSF asserted that ACEE may be converted into Department of Lifelong Learning but MU Academic Council hould not try to take any should not try to take any decision incompatible to the guideline.
Pointing out that the MU authority furnished a written commitment to the UGC on March 30 this year to abide by the guidelines of the Department of Lifelong Learning, the student body expressed surprise over MU's new initiative which has the potential to jeopardise the career of students instead of working to make ACEE a full-fledged department.
With the opening of post-graduate course since 2004, the department has produced many JRF, NET, ICSSR fellows.
Moreover, the department has been imparting education to illiterate adults at different villages.
Taking serious note of the MU authority's new initiative, the MSF wondered if they would not come up with the idea of combining Manipur Institute of Management Studies with Department of Economics, Department of Geography with Department of Earth Sciences with Department of Geography, Department of Statistics with Department of Mathematics etc.
It would be in the best interest of all for MU authority to work for growth of ACEE Department instead of scheming to abolish it, the MSF said in a press release.
In another press release, the student body expressed serious concern over various protest launched by teachers at a time when annual exams are fast approaching.
It called upon the Government to work out an amicable solution regarding the teachers' genuine demands so that careers of students are not put at stake.
