Imphal, February 10 2013 :
Apart from providing medical service to the people of Manipur and neighbouring States, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI), Langol has started drawing patients from the neighbouring country of Myanmar which is relatively backward in the field of health care.
At the insistence of the State Government, Ministry of External Affairs has initiated necessary procedures to not only allow Myanmarese nationals visit Manipur for medical treatment but also introduce a system of giving visas at Moreh.
Talking to The Sangai Express, SHRI Managing Director Dr Kh Palin said that during the last six months not less than 40 people came from Myanmar every month to the hospital for medical diagnosis and treatment.
The Myanmarese nationals came to Manipur after verification by security agencies.
Sometimes, SHRI arranged vehicles to bring the foreign patients from Moreh to Imphal.
A large number of patients came for treatment of kidney problems, stone problems, hepatitis-C or normal health check-up.
The Myanmarese nationals who came to SHRI included people from Myanmar-China border.
SHRI is already planning to open another hospital at Moreh and it has already performed a surgical operation on a child of Myanmar's Saigang province Minister under its Smile Train programme, the Managing Director maintained.
Notably, the State Government has already urged the Ministry of External Affairs to facilitate Myanmar open a visa office at Imphal.
Apart from the cross-border trade between India and Myanmar through Moreh and Tamu, many cultural exchange programmes were also organised in the recent past.
Moreover, efforts are on to introduce a bus service between Imphal and Mandalay.
