TDC directs truck owner to pay Rs 5 lakh to bereaved family

Imphal, February 10 2013 : Transportors and Drivers Council (TDC) has resolved that the owner of the FCI truck whose driver Ningombam Gobardhon of Wangjing Hodamba under Thoubal district was found murdered inside the truck at Kohima in Nagaland along National Highway 2(Imphal-Dimapur Road) on February 7 morning, should pay an amount of Rs 5 lakhs to the family of the deceased driver as compensation.

Gobardhon was found murdered the truck while he was on his way to Imphal after lifting sugar from the FCI godown at Guwahati.

The handyman of the truck too has been missing.

H Ranjit, President of TDC, informed media persons that Ramesh Prasad, the owner of the truck has not made himself available at the office of the TDC even after repeated requests.

"The absconding truck owner was again asked by TDC to be present at its office by 11 am today.

But he did not show up", Ranjit said, while announcing that if Ramesh Prasad does not come to the office of TDC by 11am tomorrow, a criminal case would be lodged against him along with registering his name among the list of people involved in the brutal killing of Gobardhon.

In addition, another case would also be filed for taking into custody of the truck (registration number MN01/5835) belonging to Ramesh Prasad, he added.

Ranjit further informed that from the side of TDC, an amount of Rs 50,000 would be handed over to the family members of Gobardhon tomorrow morning as assistance towards the ritual ceremonies to be performed for the departed soul by the bereaved family members.

The TDC President disclosed that since a driving license has been recovered from the spot where Gobardhon was found killed; TDC is trying to solve the mystery behind the killing.

He also appealed to the State Government to trace the missing sugar bags and arrest the culprits involved in the killing.

Furthermore, TDC President appealed to all the truck owners not to send their trucks along NH-2 to get more profit and warned that if anything happens to the drivers and handymen, then the truck owners should pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to the family.

He also expressed discontentment over the attitude of the Manipur Police Commandos who resorted to firing tear gas shells while the drivers and leaders of transport agencies were offering floral tributes to the departed soul of Gobardhan yesterday, and observed that the unruly conduct of the police was really unfortunate.

Action should be taken up against the guilty police personnel before February 12 failing which intense agitation would be taken up by TDC, he warned further.
