Imphal, February 10 2013 :
A week-long awareness campaign aimed at highlighting denial of PDS items to economically under-privileged section of the society has been flagged off today by United People's Struggle Committee chief advisor N Binoy from the RIMS road office of the Committee.
During the campaign street corner meetings would be organised to demand provision of PDS items to select beneficiaries and punish corrupt officials.
The campaign will also demand monthly provision of 35 kg rice to each family as Rs 3.50 per kg for AAY rice and Rs 6.15 per kg for BPL rice.
In his brief address, Binoy alleged that presence of corrupt officials is depriving economically weak families their right to have essential food items.
Demanding that there should be egalitarian food item provision in both the hills and valley areas, he noted that hardly 30 percent of the population living below poverty line have access to such facility due to incompetency of officials in the distribution of ration cards.
According to the Committee president RK Radhysana first day of the campaign will cover Imphal East district areas followed by Imphal West, Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.
He also alleged that Ministers and MLAs take into possession better quality PDS items with the sub-standard ones released to the common people.
