122nd death anniversary of Niranjan Subedar

Niranjan Subedar was fondly remembered on his 122nd death anniversary today.
The day was observed jointly by Gorkha Welfare Union, All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union, Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Manipur and Bharatiya Gorkha Parishad, Manipur State Committee at Kanglatongbi.
Niranjan Subedar was hanged to death by British India Government on the charge of revolting against them in connivance with Jubaraj Tikendrajit on this day in 1891 .
Sekmai A/C MLA Khwairakpam Devendra, Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union president RB Chapagain and retired Col RS Jassal were present at the occasion as chief guest, president and special guest respectively.
Paying floral tributes to the portrait of Niranjan Subedar and remembering the works and achievements of the martyr by different historians and scholars through their speeches were the main highlights of the observance.
Subedar Niranjan was born in Tikuamoh village of present day Uttarakhand.

He joined the army of Manipur kingdom constituted by Jubaraj Tikendrajit after snapping ties with the 34th Native Infantry of British Army.
He was later promoted to the rank of Subedar by the Jubaraj.
Niranjan Subedar was arrested by the British Army on the charge of revolting against the British in connivance with Jubaraj Tikendrajit.
According to the documents available at Manipur State Archives, Niranjan Subedar was hanged to death in jail on June 8, 1891 after facing a trial before the then Chief Political Officer, Manipur Field Force.
Jamandar Kajao and Chirai Naga were awarded the similar punishment on May 23, and October 13 ,1891 in jail respectively.
On the other hand, Jubaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General were hanged to death at Pheidabung in full public view on August 13, 1891 .
