Temporary market shed turned into a dumping site

Imphal, February 03 2021: The temporary market shed also known to people as the 4th Khwairamband Keithel has been turned into a 'dumping site'.

When this reporter visited the marketplace today, people visiting the markets nearby, shops and vendors in the surrounding were found littering the temporary shed.

However, this wasn't the only reason fot the strong foul smell that was coming from the open space in the northern side of the temporary market shed.

A person who owns a shop in the temporary market said garbage trucks regularly dump loads of waste collected from the surroundings in the northern open space.

After two or three days, the waste are then picked up and transported to other places.

This routine has made the temporary market shed a dumping site.

The strong rotten smell from the site/waste is unbearable, he said.

Indeed the stench was strong.

The ImpIml Municipal Corporation (IMC) and the authorities concerned should regularly inspect the markets in the heart of Imphal and enforce strict rules regarding waste disposal.

If Imphal is to become a clean city, the markets shouldn't be turned into a dumping site.

Such unregulated disposal of waste in the heart of the city poses a health risk to the people, he said.

When Ministers and other high ranking officers of the Departments concerned visited the markets, they promised to make the markets and the city clean and instructed their subordinate officials to take up the required tasks.

But, when the higher officials are not around, the subordinate officials are not keen on doing the tasks entrusted to them.

This is also a failure on the part of the authorities concerned in making Imphal and its markets clean, he added.

Some of the shopkeepers also echoed the same and appealed to the IMC and authorities concerned not to dump waste in the vicinity of the market, especially when facing COVID-19 requires maintaining hygiene, and ensuring clean and healthy environment.
