Imphal, July 08 2021:
Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur has appealed the Governor to exercise emergency measures to take up necessary steps in the light of an impending drought in the state amidst the second wave of the pandemic.
Manipur belongs to the climate group of 'Cwa' according to the World's climatic division classified by Koeppen which means that the state experiences sub-tropical monsoon climate with heavy precipitation during the rainy season, said a statement issued by AIMS today.
Over 70 pc of the state's population depends on agriculture directly or indirectly with agriculture providing employment to the huge scores of workforce of the state, added the statement.
Manipur has got only 242.6 mm of ram against its annual average of 1881 mm according to World Weather online.
What this means is that the State has received an extreme below normal precipitation, said Dr Atom Sunil Singh, director of AIMS in the statement.
Dr Atom Sunil added that there is currently no water on fields to kickstart the agricultural process and it is high time emergency measures are taken up to save the fields from a possible drought.
