Imphal, April 16 2017:
The Khongjom Battle Memorial Committee, Manipur has appealed to the State Government to consider commemoration of Khongjom Battle on April 25, instead of April 23 .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, the committee's secretary Chingtam Luwang said that for the past 23 years they have been demanding the Government for observing the anniversary of Khongjom Battle on the correct date the battle was fought instead of April 23 .
The committee submitted memoranda from time to time to the State Government and an open letter/memorandum was submitted to President Pranab Mukharjee last year when he inaugurated the Khongjom War Memorial Complex.
He alleged that observation of April 23 as Khongjom War anniversary is based on wrong history and incorrect records.
He also said that late Ningthoukhongjam Khel-chandra in his book Anglo-Manipuri War written after his visit to London clearly mentioned that the Khongjom Battle started in the early morning of April 25 and it lasted just for a day.
Chingtam Luwang alleged that the resolution to observe April 23 as Khongjom War anniversary was adopted through voting among nine committee members.
He appealed to the State Government to correct the wrong history of the Khongjom Battle.
The committee had formed an expert committee to find out the true date of the Khongjom Battle.
After a thorough research, they submitted their finding to the previous State Government but there was no positive response.
The committee has been looking forward to hold a meeting with Art and Culture Minister in order to correct the wrong history of Khongjom War.
Speaking to the media persons senior citizen RK Jhalajit who was also among the nine committee members said that the Battle of Khongjom occurred on April 25 and the Kangla fort was captured by the British forces on April 27 .
He also alleged that nothing was mentioned in Cheitharol Kumbaba that the battle was fought on April 23 .
