Imphal, April 16 2017:
Yumnam Shanti of Thoubal Kiyamsiphai has clarified that the allegations made by the Wangkhem MLA against the NEIDP candidate Y Nabachandra are false and baseless and that Nabachandra is not related in anyway to the incident.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, Shanti said that on April 14, his son, Manichandra, got into an argument with Thiyam Ibungo and Mobi regarding some issue during which Ibungo threatened to kill him.
After his son came home and informed him of the incident, Shanti went to meet Ibungo.
Shanti alleged that when he tried to stop Ibungo, he punched him on the left side of his face without any warning , after which he lost consciousness and fell down in a nearby drain.
Upon returning home, Shanti told the people of his locality everything and the angry locals went to Ibungo's residence to talk to him regarding the matter.
Denying the allegations that a large number of workers led by Y Nabachandra attacked Ibungo's residence, Y Romeo, the younger brother of Y Nabachandra clarified that his brother was at Guwahati for treatment on the day of the incident.
He also said that his brother is not related with the incident in any way and alleged that Ibungo, who is presently an ASI, acts like a thug in their locality.
Romeo said that a confrontation took place between the police and the locals when the Thoubal police team led by the SDPO which had arrived to pacify the tense situation began to use crude words towards the womenfolk of the angry mob.
He alleged that the police fired a large number of tear gas and smoke bombs and even lathi charged the women during the scuffle.
Some women got injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment, Romeo added, condemning the harsh action of the security forces.
