5 Assam MLAs demand Aug 13 as state holiday

Five MLAs of Assam have urged chief minister Himanta Biswa to declare August 13 as state holiday to commemorate supreme sacrifice made by Bir Tikendrajit.
In this regard, the five MLAs namely Kaushik Rai of Lakhipur, Krishnendu Paul of Patharkandi, Mihir Kanti Shome of Udharbond, Bijoy Malakar of Ratabari and Dipayan Chakroborty of Silchar assembly constituencies submitted a joint written request to Assam chief minister.
According to the request, mother India's true son and freedom fighter Bir Tiken-drajit was publicly hanged at 4.30pm on August 13, 1891 by the British government.
Bir Tikendrajit was the commander of Manipur Army and engineered palace revolution that led to the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891 .
By his call for 'Save mother India from the Britishers', so many Indian brave hearts were influenced and they participated actively along with him in India's freedom struggle against the Britishers.
On August 13, 1891, Bir Tikendrajit along with Thangal General sacrificed with smile on their Up for mother India while they were hanged by the Britishers, the joint request said.
According to the MLAs, people in many parts of Assam have been commemorating Bir Tikencirajit's death on August 13 every year since long.
Not only Manipuri community but every community living in Assam has been observing the death anniversary of Bir Tikendrajit in a befitting manner and it is a long standing demand of people to declare his death anniversary (August 13) as state holiday, it said and urged the Assam chief minister to do the needful.
