2nd Women Drama Festival from Apr 10

Imphal, April 07 2022: Manipur Cultural Council (MCC) in association with Khenjohglang would be organising the 2nd Women Drama Festival from April 10 to 22 .

Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club here on Thursday, MCC president Kangjam Radhakumar said that as part of Azadi Ka Mahotsav programme, the women's drama festival would be organised with the support of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.

In all, 4 theatre groups and 6 all-women Shumang Leela groups would be taking part in the festival.

Khenjonglang would be presenting its play, 'Anouba Khudol', Banian Theatre Repertory 'Jalianwala Bhag'; Bashikhong Dramatic Union 'Nongsida Ngansingannu', and Lairenkabi Youth Dramatic Union 'Lamdaipung' at the auditorium of JNM Dance Academy from April 10 .

On April 16, all-women Shumang Leela Groups would be presenting their performances.

Meitei Leimarol Art Performing Centre will perform 'Nungoigi Tengthakhol'; Panthoibi Leela Lup 'Numit Kappa'; Alternative Theatre Group 'Eidi Ngaikhi'; The Women for Cultural Centre 'Yairipok Thambalnu'; Yangam Leirak Nupi Leela Association 'Meigi Ching'; and Western Cultural Association 'Khujailok', at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound.

The 10 theatre plays and Shumang Leela are all directed by women and a theatre workshop for women directors will also be organised during the festival, K Rad hakumar conveyed.

Khenjonglang director Dr S Thaninleima observed that women directors are still unable to carve a place for themselves although Manipur proscenium theatre is almost hitting a century.

Thus, the festival is being organised with the aim of encouraging women directors to venture into Proscenium theatre, she added.
