'Microchips' for easy identification of Mithuns

In an initiative to do away with dispute between Mithun owners, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Government of Mizoram has come with the idea of identifying each Mithun by way of embedding 'Microchip' in the body of cattle.
So far, the micro-chip identification has been to about 500 Mithuns, official release today said, adding, the identification of Mithun is being continued.
As Mithuns are semi-domesticated animal, they freely move about in the forest until gathered by their owners for food, after which they again scatter in the forest.
The owners identify their Mithuns from others' from the colour and mark on their ear and other parts of the body.
The Microchip used now for identification of Mithun is a tiny one and has 15 digits.
As it is injected in the body of the animal, it cannot be easily removed, and designed to remain during their entire lifetime.
In 2007, 1939 Mithuns have been recorded, and in 2012, 3283, the official source said, adding, there is an increase of 1344 in the last 5 years.
