Ukhrul: Luira festival begins

Ukhrul, February 16 2018:
Luira Phanit, a three day seed sowing festival of Hunphun /Ukhrul village started today with pomp and gaiety at Mission Ground Alungtang, Ukhrul.
Vice chairman Ukhrul District Autonomous Council (UADC) Isaac who attended the opening ceremony of the festival as the chief guest stated that Hunphun Village is the very heart of the Tangkhul community.
Most of the Tangkhul customary practices were originated from the village and gradually spread across the villages of Ukhrul district particularly among the Tangkhul villages, he said.
He highlighted the initiatives of UADC to develop Ukhrul town.
Special guest of the inaugural function Aleng A' Shimray urged the youth of Hunphun /Ukhrul to identify the important historical places of the village for preservation.
The heredity Headman H A Sarimaya yesterday conducted the traditional ritual of seed sowing called 'Awungashi Kharuk' and hoisted the village flag at the VA Court Awungtang, Ukhrul in the presence of VA members, elders and the locals of Hunphun/Ukhrul village.
The Headman also declared "Luikathui" meaning that the villagers are allow to perform all agricultural activities for the year.
27 localities of Hunphun / Ukhrul village would be competing in different events-traditional games, folk dance and folk sones during the three days festival at Mission Ground Alungtang, Ukhrul.
On the last day of the festival, young damsels of Ukhrul will be contesting for the Title "Miss Hunphun Luira" .
