While acknowledging that some doctors serving in the Regional institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal are under the pay-list of certain private hospitals/clinics, Director of the premier institute Prof L Fimate conceded that no action can be initiated against such doctors owing to lack of supporting evidences.
Informing that cases of RIMS doctors practising in private medical centres had already been highlighted to the North Eastern Council (NEC) under whose financial assistance the Institute is functioning, Prof Fimate, urged the public to extend all possible assistance in checking such practices.
RIMS is set to function under the financial provision and purview of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from April 1 onwards after the institute is upgraded to the status of AIIMS.
The Director also acknowledged report of some of the Institute's doctors enjoying perks from certain private clinics as percentage amount for referring patients to these clinics, located near RIMS Hospital, for laboratory testing.
When questioned what measures had been initiated to curb the practice, Prof Fimate evading a direct response explained that it is an illegal act which had been discussed in meetings of respective Heads of Department in addition to issuance of circulars on the matter.
Reiterating that lack of concrete evidence is hampering initiation of punitive action, the Director said that complaints may be put up before him if any such case crops up.
Regarding frequent accusations that medical personnel (doctors) working in the Institute are neglecting their duties, Prof Fimate maintained that a complaint box will be put up in the hospital premise where any grievances and complaints with details of the doctors concerned as well as positive suggestions could be placed for prompt redressal.
He also informed that to encourage RIMS doctors dispense their duty sincerely 25 percent non-practising allowance are being paid to them.
