A suspected underground activist was gunned down by a combined team of Imphal East commandos and 32 Assam rifles at Iroisemba area last night at around 11.20.According to police, the unidentified youth was slain in an encounter at Babuthong after which a 9 mm pistol with three rounds have been recovered from the deceased.
The body is being kept at RIMS morgue for identification.
The victim, likely to be in early 30s, 5.4 feet in height, with wheatish complexion, longish hair and attired in jean pants, suffered three bullet wounds.
Claiming the deceased person to be a PREPAK cadre, a statement issued by PRO IGAR (S) said the joint security team noticed three persons moving in a suspicious manner at around 11.30 pm of March 12.On being challenged the unidentified persons opened fire resulting in retaliatory firing by the security force personnel subsequently killing one while two others escaped under the cover of darkness.
The body along with the recovered arm and ammunition have been handed over to Lamphel police station.
Meanwhile, police bomb squad safely blasted a Chinese-made bomb recovered from near a shop in Hatta Golapati area at heingang Mamangching today.
