Imphal, November 07 2016:
Trinamool Congress, State unit president Kim Gangte, has slammed the State Government for its decision to build the National Sports University at Yaithibi Loukon despite its 2014 land use policy.
Speaking to media persons at the party office, Kim said that the Government cannot even follow its own policy which prohibits construction works on agricultural land and to complicate matter further, the construction of the sports university has been mired in a series of controversies.
Strongly condemning the State Government's brutality towards demonstrators when the Union Minister of State (YAS) came to inspect the site selected for the university, she said that the Government has failed in every aspect.
Questioning the motive behind BJP's decision of constantly shifting the construction sites, she said that BJP and Congress should not politicise the issue of setting up National Sports University in the State.
Kim said that development projects should not be confined only in Imphal and Thoubal areas.
The Congress Government led by the Chief Minister should also focus on the hill areas so that the valley and hill areas can develop equally.
Unfinished or half baked development works and protracted periods taken in executing different projects are some of the main reasons why the hill areas are against the Congress Government, she added.
Blaming the ineffectiveness of the Government, she said, 'The quality of the roads in Imphal really beg the question of how the condition of roads would be at the hill areas' .
She said that the public perception of the present Government as a highly corrupt one is justified because of its own actions.
Speaking further she said, 'Trinamool Congress considers Jiribam deserves to be declared a full fledged district and the residents of Jiribam should not have to bear the burden of coming all the way to Imphal East for office related works' .
She said that it was really unfortunate that the Chief Minister could not take a clear decision till now.
Frequent bandhs, blockades and general strikes are results of the people becoming fed up with the ineffective Government, Kim said.
She went on to accuse the Government of turning a blind eye to the issues of Jiribam and Sadar hills for far too long and added that despite their suffering, the people have been forced to resort to economic blockades on the two important National Highways.
RK Priyobarta, youth president of the Trinamool Congress State unit said, 'The Sports University can be built anywhere in Manipur.
It is not like the people of Thoubal would object if the university is built anywhere in Manipur other than Thoubal.
If the university gets shifted to any other State, then it would be because of the stubbornness of the Congress and the BJP' .
He said that compromising development for political interests would not do anything good to the people.
BJP and Congress should take into account the losses the State is likely to suffer in case the coveted National Sports University is shifted to any other State on account of political bickerings between them, he added.
