Imphal, August 07 2014:
Hostellers of Manipur University who were evicted from their hostels by MU authority yesterday staged a sit-in-protest today demanding reopening of hos-tels and commencement of classes under peaceful envi-ronment.
About seventy hostellers of all the hostellers evicted yesterday are still putting up at Heijingang Keithel, Can-chipur.
Student protestors initially froze vehicular movements in and out of the university gate as part of their movement.
However, with the intervention of police, the students eased the blockade in return for their (police) permission to stage a peaceful protest.
After a short while, however, the police fired tear gas shells which dishevelled the protest.
According to one of the protestors, all hostellers were notified by the MU authorities to vacate university hostels temporarily in the evening yesterday until futher notice.
When students refusedto comply with, the student reported, the authorities employed forces upon them.
This is a rare case, the student added.
Helpless in the night, the hostellers took refuge at the Heijingang Keithel beside Manipur university's main gate and would put up there until hostels are reopened, reported the student.
On the other hand, the Linguistic Department conducted a workshop despite the authorities' notification to suspend classes and every other academic related activity in the university until further notification.
