Imphal, August 07 2014:
A fund drive committee, formed by three different organizations, has sought monetary help from different sections of the society and Government for the player, who has been selected to represent India in the upcoming 18th Asian Master Athletic Championship to be held in Japan from August 19 to 23 .
Speaking to the reporters at Manipur Press Club, convenor of the committee, Jinendra Maibam said that representatives of Health Women Society, Image of Manipur and Lalambung Makhong Takhellabam Leikai decided to form the committee to collect fund for L Inaobi Devi, who would represent India in the championship.
He added that the organisations took up the initiative as L Inaobi, a cancer survivor, is financially weak.
Although, 35 athletes have been selected for the championship, only four athletes have made up their mind to participate in the event.
Saying that not even a single paisa has been provided to the athletes by the Government in this regard, Jinendra said that some people have generously donated some amount to the committee so far.
L Inaobi Devi said she has been selected for the championship as she had shown good performance in the National Master Athletic Championship held at Coimbatore in February this year.
Inaobi won gold medal in hammer throw, silver in javelin throw and bronze in shotput in the National competition.
