Ukhrul, January 14 2022:
An early morning inferno on Friday gutted two residential quarters at the district's Fishery staff quarters' campus at Phungreitang in Ukhrul town.
Household properties and cash belonging to the two families were completely destroyed in the fire.
However, no casualty was reported.
The two adjoining residential quarters were occupied by district fishery officer (DFO) AS Somingam and fishery inspector Suiyingchon Athary.
According to the police, the fire broke out around 3:30 am.
"We moved out as soon as we received the report.
The Fire Brigade had arrived when we reached the spot around 3:43 am, a police officer said.
The police said that timely arrival of fire personnel had prevented the fire from spreading to the adjacent building of the MSPDCL, Ukhrul, though the two quarters and properties inside them could not be salvaged.
The total value of the household goods and properties and hard cash destroyed in the fire is yet to be estimated, police said.
Eyewitnesses said that the fire was suspected to have started from Athary's quarters which rapidly spread to the other house.
There was only one male occupant at Athary's house when the fire started but he failed to alert the occupants of the other house, they said.
