Thoubal, January 14 2022:
A 43-year old man and his wife were brutally assaulted by some unidentified armed persons at around 10.30 pm yesterday at Salungpham within Heirok Assembly Constituency.
The victims have been identified as Phuritsabam Anoi Singh and his wife Phuritsabam (O) Maipakpi Devi of Salungpham Mayai Leikai.
In addition to thrashing Anoi to the point of death, the unidentified assailants also fired several rounds of shots in the air.
They also ravaged vegetables grown in a farm.
As Anoi was critically injured, he was rushed to Raj Medicity.
Maipakpi said that she and her husband were sleeping in a hut built on the vegetable farm which is located just in front of their house.
At around 10.30 pm, they heard someone knocking at their door.
As Maipakpi opened the door, some unidentified masked men barged into the hut and thrashed Anoi black and blue.
At the same time, the masked men pointed a gun at Maipakpi and threatened her not to make any noise.

They also physically assaulted her.
The assailants left the couple only when they believed that Anoi was dead, according to the wife.
As people of the neighbourhood heard her repeated cry for mercy and help, they rushed in and took them to hospital.
While Maipakpi was discharged after treatment, Anoi has been hospitalised.
Saying that her husband is currently battling for life, Maipakpi appealed to the authorities concerned to book and punish all the culprits.
Later Thoubal SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam came and inspected the crime scene.
Saying that police have some suspects in their mind, the SP informed that the suspects would be pulled up soon and necessary action would be initiated as per law.
Taking strong exception to the assault, local people staged a protest demonstration at Salungpham Mayai Leikai Bazar today.
Demanding punishment of all the culprits at the earliest, the protesters asserted that the people of Salungpham abhor violence in any form.
Urging for opening of a police outpost at Salungpham, they appealed to all concerned not to perpetrate any kind of election-related violence at Salungpham area.
United Clubs Organisation (UCO) assistant secretary Ph Mani condemned the brutal assault on the innocent couple.
Saying that last night's brutal assault was the first election related violence seen at Salungpham, Mani informed that they have adopted a number of resolutions to ensure that no election related violence happens ever again at Salungpham.
Informing that Anoi has not yet regained consciousness, Mani urged the authorities concerned to book and punish the culprits at the earliest.
He also asked all the three candidates vying for Heirok Assembly seat to take responsibility until Anoi returns to normal life.
