Imphal, January 14 2022:
Reeling under lack of infrastructure and development initiatives, residents of Makui village in Kangpokpi district are yearning for government attention with the hope that someday, they will see the glimpse of development in their localities.
According to the villagers, there is no all-weather road to connect the village with NH 2.The existing road was renovated several years ago and as such they are facing severe hardships in commuting along it.
In the absence of transport service, they have to trek or use Shaktiman truck.
Though they had approached the authority concerned with request for repairing the road on numerous occasions, no initiatives have been taken up till date, they lamented.
In terms of healthcare facility, there is no health centre in Makui and nearby villages.
As a result, they have to often carry sick people on makeshift stretchers up to the highway in order to take the patient to Kangpokpi district headquarters for getting medical treatment.
Pregnant women are facing the maximum hardships as they require regular medical check-up and many had died on the way to hospital, the villagers said while urging the government to set up a health centre in the area for providing primary healthcare services.
There was a government high school in the village which also used to provide benefits to the students from nearby villages.
For the last seven to eight years, the school remained defunct due to lack of teaching staff.
They had urged the authority to fill in the vacant posts many times, villagers said, while urging the government to send the required teachers.
Timber trade is the main source of livelihood for the villagers but they are facing issues in this trade as well due to lack of proper road connectivity.
Vegetables grown in the village often get wasted as they have no means to transport them to the market.
Earlier, there was a small market where farmers from the nearby villages also carried out small trades.
However, armed groups had closed the market.
In the absence of water supply schemes in the nearby area, the villagers are relying on stream water for consumption.
There is no mobile network in the area and the villagers are not getting the benefits of mobile connectivity.
As a result, students of the village could not attend online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic, the villagers conveyed.
Despite the claim of bringing equal development in the hills and the valley area by the government, the villagers are living in an abject situation without any modern infrastructure and facilities, they said while drawing attention of the government to take up necessary steps to improve their living conditions.
