Shija conducts first live laparoscopic surgery workshop

Imphal, November 21 2021: A one day live-streaming of Laparoscopic surgeries over the internet was held at Shija Hospitals on Thursday from Shija's operation theatre with a viewership of 574 live viewers.

A release of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) informed that the first of its kind live-streaming of laparoscopic surgeries was held under the banner of AMASI and Stryker and transmitted by LapGuru.

During the live operative workshop, Shija Hospitals consultant Laparoscopic and Endoscopic surgeon Dr Jugindra Sorokhaibam, who is also the president of Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI), demonstrated safe Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Lapchole) on a patient with empyema of gall bladder which is a severe form of acute cholecystitis or inflammation of the gall bladder.

Another consultant Laparoscopic and Endoscopic surgeon of the hospital Dr Devendra Khwairakpam, who is also a faculty of AMASI, performed a Laparoscopic CBD exploration (LCBDE) for large CBD stone on a previously Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy done patient with severe adhesions.

The viewers interacted live asking pertinent questions to the health professionals.

In both the cases Indocyanine green (ICG) dye which is typically injected preoperatively for biliary procedures was demonstrated using the 1688 Stryker 4K system that provides advanced 4K ultra-high-definition surgical video images, the release elaborated.

"With such workshop for the first time in the Northeast, Manipur has placed itself in the global map of leading centres in laparoscopic surgery with a capacity to train hundreds of surgeons at one time by live audiovisual demonstration anywhere in the world", said the release, adding that recordings of the event would be available at LapGuru website www.lapguru.com.
