Imphal, June 17 2021:
Karang Island Development Organisation advisor Haobijam Gitajen has urged all concerned not to sell off Karang Village under Thanga AC in the name of taking up developmental projects.
Speaking to newspersons, Gitajen informed that Karang Island is a popular tourist spot and various projects have been taken up in the island in the name of development.
Although it was declared as the first cashless Indian island, the service has pretty much fizzled out.
Additionally, the funds sanctioned for upgrading Karang and Charang Khangpokshang into model villages under PMGAY have not been properly utilised.
While some services regarding water, road and transport, health care, solar lamp, wi-fi have been introduced in some parts, there are issues of funds embezzlement, not to mention about attachment of Champu Khangpok village as part of Karang constituency.
"Such issues have hampered the real development in the island.
Even the two ambulances meant for the island are second hand and belong to a person from Kangpokpi", the advisor said and urged the authority concerned to look into the matter and punish those responsible for tainting the name of Karang village.
Stating that Karang village is a poor and vulnerable village suffering from shortage of food, medicines and basic supplies due to the pandemic, Gi-tajen said that the tourist island is being treated like a step-child.
