Couple beaten in Heirok AC, sit in staged

Unidentified miscreants severely thrashed a couple around 10.30 pm on Thursday at Salungpham village under Heirok assembly constituency.
The injured couple has been admitted to Raj Polyclinic for treatment.
The injured couple has been identified as Phuritsabam Anoi Singh (43) son of Ph Tolamu and his wife Maipakpi of Salungpham Mayai Leikai.
Apart from beating up the couple, the miscreants also fired several rounds and destroyed vegetables planted in their farm.
Speaking in this regard, Maipakpi narrated that the incident occurred around 10.30pm Thursday at their farm house located close to their residence.
Someone knocked at the door of the farm house and upon opening the door unidentified mask men barged in and assaulted her husband, who was sleeping, she said, while adding that she was also beaten and told to keep quiet by pointing a gun.
The miscreants left upon thinking her husband was death.
She further informed that locals came to the farmhouse upon hearing the commotion and them to the hospital where her husband is still undergoing treatment.
Stating that they are daily wage earners, Maipakpi urged authorities concerned to arrest the culprits at the earliest.
Thoubal District SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam, while inspecting the spot, said that the matter has been investigated and there were also suspects.
All the involved culprits will be arrested and punished according to the law of the land, he assured.
Meanwhile, locals staged a sit-in protest at Salungpham Mayai Leikai bazar on Friday.
The protestors posed why the couple was badly beaten up and demanded the arrest and punishment of the culprits involved in the incident.
While pointing out that they do not want any violence, the protestors also demanded setting up of a police outpost at Salungpham.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, United Club Organisation (UCO) assistant secretary Ph Mani condemned the incident of beating up the poor couple.
No violent incident related to poll has been occurred till now in Salungpham, he said.
While informing that several resolutions were adopted to prevent such incidents, Mani demanded arrest of the culprits involved and punishing them.
The injured Anoi is still unconscious and as such all the three candidates in Heirok A/C should be held responsible until he is recovers.
