Training for Spl Juvenile Police Units begins

A 3-day training programme for the Special Juvenile Police Units of Imphal East and Imphal West kicked-off Thursday at Bal Bhawan, Khuman Lampak here.
The training programme organised by the Department of Social Welfare Department under the sponsorship of the state Institute of Rural Development aims to activate and establish coordination with the statutory bodies and the service delivery structures under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) for effective intervention of the issues affecting children in the nine districts of Manipur.
The Special Juvenile Police Units have been established by the concerned district police stations under the provision of Section 63 of the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act, 2000.Each Police Station will have a Juvenile or Child Welfare Officer to handle cases relating to juvenile or children.
This Juvenile or Child Welfare Officers are the members of the Special Juvenile Police Units headed by the Superintendants of Police at the district level.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training programme, H Rupachandra, Joint Secretary, Social Welfare Department, said Police, being the first contact point in every case related to the juveniles in conflict with law or for case related to the exploitation and abuse meted out to children in need of care and protection, are among the key components of the child protection system.
He said every District Child Protection Unit functioning under the ICPS, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) working in close coordination with different stakeholders plays a very important role in safeguarding the rights of the children in the state.
Rupachandra added that the training programme being participated by different stakeholders aims to activate and establish coordination with the statutory bodies and the service delivery structures under the ICPS for effective intervention on the issues affecting children in the nine districts.
He further added that this programme is one of the new initiatives that aim to create a safety net for the children.
